CHAPTER THIRTEEN
âHello there, beautiful,â the redeemer whispered. âAre you enjoying your art?â
It was a picture in itself. The woman, with her sketchbook in hand, the pages clamped down to stop them from flapping, was perched on the rock overlooking the lighthouse.
Her hair was blowing in the wind, but despite the threatening weather, her demeanor was serene. She was calmly sketching the lighthouse, and although he couldnât see her book â he wasnât close enough â he could imagine her work. Sheâd be depicting the lighthouse with fluid, spare lines, taking in the dramatic rocks below, and of course, the scudding clouds that were darkening the sky. He was sure it would be the most perfect picture.
What a shame she wouldnât get to finish it.
Perched there, in her artistic pose, the sight made his heart swell, because she truly was the perfect sacrifice. Everything about her would be greedily embraced by the sea. Her long, slim limbs. The flowing skirt she wore, with a ruffled hemline that reminded him of scudding foam. The way her hair was tossed and whipped by the wind, so that she had to shake it out of the way, in a gesture that was half impatient, and half distracted.
He could see she was in another world, wedded to her art, and that spoke to his soul. Here she was, in the growing darkness, looking to capture a silhouette that was becoming more elusive with every moment. The light was fading, but still she was there.
It was magnificent.
He knew what it was like to embrace a higher cause. After all, that was exactly what he was doing in his work, too.
He moved forward. She was about a hundred yards away, and it would not be an easy distance to navigate. Luckily she was facing the lighthouse, absorbed by capturing its detail, but the angle meant that he had to creep up behind her, and that was not so easy. There was a rocky outcrop in the way that heâd have to get past, and then he would have to avoid a pool of water, foaming as the wash sprayed it.
All this might attract her attention, and if she looked around then he knew that it was over. She would scream, she would run, she would drop that sketch pad. The entire scenario would be contaminated beyond redemption. The only way he could present his sacrifices was if they went to their death without any knowledge of it. They had to be pure.
Of course, there was always the fear, at the back of his mind, that if they made a fuss and people came running, and they discovered the items that he used to subdue them, then all his work would be over. He knew what people were like. They wouldnât understand the need for the seamless transition from one plane of existence to another.
Suffering was never his intention. After all, it contradicted the whole point of what he was doing. His new lifeâs work was a wholehearted effort to prevent suffering.
